This summer, the Greek islands welcomed a surge of tourists, pushing occupancy rates well above 90% across popular destinations. Representatives from several islands shared their insights with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), highlighting the positive trends.
Naxos and the Small Cyclades enjoyed high occupancy throughout the summer, fueled by both domestic and international travelers. “August saw particularly strong numbers,” reported Vangelis Katsaras, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades. “Visitors from Europe, America, Australia and beyond have shown confidence in choosing our islands.”
Ios also celebrated a successful August, with Mayor Gikas Gikas stating that “despite the challenging economic climate and rising travel costs, occupancy rates surpassed 90%.”
Samos witnessed even more impressive figures, reaching near-full capacity. “Occupancy rates soared to 95%-100%,” revealed Evangelos Marnezos, Deputy Mayor of Tourism. He attributed this success to the island’s unique blend of “religion, tradition, and an inviting atmosphere.” Samos attracted a diverse range of visitors, with strong representation from Greece, Turkey, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Marnezos also noted a significant rise in tourists from Italy, America, and Australia, highlighting the island’s growing appeal. Looking ahead, Samos expects a strong September, bolstered by targeted promotional campaigns in key markets.
Lipsi, meanwhile, experienced a surge in arrivals compared to the previous year, particularly during July. Confidently anticipating further growth, the island expects to exceed 100% occupancy. This success stems from Lipsi’s commitment to preserving its natural environment and continually improving tourist services, fostering a loyal visitor base who return year after year.
Overall, the Greek islands are enjoying a vibrant tourism season, reinforcing their position as a top global destination. Despite global economic pressures, the allure of these idyllic islands continues to attract travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
